Parsnips A Plenty

I guess that only about three of my faithful readers will recognize the reference in the title of my post today. For the rest of you, you really do not want to know what it is about anyway. And yes, the subject of my photograph today is a bunch of parsnips. I actually got to leave the office for more than a few minutes today to go for a walk. I went to the City Market to shoot some photos and check out the progress on the new market building. I am very excited that it appears there will be an area along the river bank for putting in canoes and kayaks.

After I read a little bit about parsnips, I want to try to find some recipes that use them. Apparently, for generations they filled the void that existed in Old World cooking before the introduction of potatoes from the New World. While parsnips are related to carrots, which you can see from their shape, they are even closer in relation to parsley.

Update - I looked back at some old posts and realized that a year ago on a Friday afternoon I visited the City Market and used a photo from my walk that day, too. The bench in my post from Friday, November 7, 2008 no longer exists, as the River Trail has been rerouted through the area where it was located.
